Gurkha Chefs Nepalese Restaurant, Rainworth, Nottinghamshire. Ratings based on image portrayed and price point. See our featured posts for scale. Overall experience 7/10 Service 7/10 dropping to 4/10 Food 7/10 Setting/atmosphere 4/10 Cleanliness 7/10 Food ordered Starters Poppadoms £0.80 each and pickle tray £2.80 Momo (Nepalese chicken dumplings) £5.95 Gurkha Sizzlers £11.50 Mains/sides Pilau rice £2.75 2x Keema Naan £2.95 each Lamb Hariyali £11.95 Honey Chilli Chicken £11.50 Chicken Korma £9.95 We stopped by this recently opened (new owners) Nepalese and Indian restaurant on a Sunday evening. It was quite quiet with only 3 other tables full. The kerb appeal of this establishment is somewhat lacking, very plain and uninviting to say the least. This seemed to carry on inside. The restaurant was very plain and lacked any sort of character. everything had had a fresh lick of paint as expected under new ownership and overall seemed clean. Being greeted and seated by the waiter we were offered the buffet that was available but chose to ask for menus to make our own choices. Our waiter then handed over the menus and proceeded to set the table (it was set differently for the buffet) polishing each piece of cutlery and plate before placing it down. A nice attention to detail that immediately caught our eye and raised our expectations for the meal ahead. We ordered a selection of starters and mains opting for a mix of familiar and never before tried options. The Momo starter was delicious, the dipping sauce was flavourful but with the dumplings being hot and the sauce cold it was a bit of an odd sensation in the mouth. The poppadoms were fresh and crisp and the pickle tray the same, clean flavours with the Gurkha's on twist adding a pleasant dimension. The mains were also of a high standard. The Lamb Hariyali was new to us and though it was not a dish to our taste we can appreciate the quality of it. Well cooked lamb and a distinct but not overpowering mint flavour running through it. The Honey Chilli Chicken was again a new to us dish. The chicken and the whole dish in fact was melt in the mouth. It literally dissolved on the tongue,. While a little on the sweet side (it was a honey dish) it was very nice but one we suggest should be shared, It could become a bit sickly after a few spoonfuls. The Korma was the real star of the show. We always order Korma as a standard marker. It was exceptional. Thick, creamy and packed with flavour. One of the best we have ever had. As were the Keema naans. unlike many places these were thin, very light, a slightly crisp outer and a soft centre with a nice even spread of keema meat throughout. The rice was distinctly average, perfectly pleasant but nothing special. The service was great up to getting our mains then we seem to be left alone as if we were no longer important once the money had been spent. Up to this point it was great. The Pecking Order final verdict- The food is the star of this show, the setting really needs some attention to make this a place for a real dining experience. Definitely has potential. A return visit is in order once the new owners have had time to make their mark on the place.

What a gem this is. Simply put the best food of its type we have ever had. I have no concerns about recommending the Ghurka Chefs to anyone. We both had complete different dishes and they were all absolutely outstanding. Please give it a try - you will not be disappointed I am sure. It also has its own secure car park. An excellent dining experience Paul & Yvonne
